The Artist's Documentation Process

For many decades, visual artists wielded camera and tripod in hand to document their artwork for purposes of exhibition and catalog entries, as well as finding jobs. The time, labor, and costs were overwhelming and became a particular hardship for emerging artists and students. In today's world wide web, artists create and post their websites in cyberspace. Yet, at this point in time this may not be enough, as many artists makes no sales nor, at worse, go unnoticed as they seemingly float in a complex cyberspace world. In the past and present, artists pay fees to gain exposure through gallery networks on the web, and post images of their work as well as biographical data and artist's statements. Yet again, artists pleased with the exposure of being promoted by such a website, saw profits (the artists' fees) gravitate mostly to the web creator creating little or no sales of his or her work. As a positive alternative, artists may create blogs and links that make them more accessible at a lower or no cost.

The below listed addresses are examples of three different types of artist websites. Note that the format of "work, artist statement, biographical data, and contact page, etc." are fairly consistent in all designs in the artist websites. Secondly, please visit the website that gives artists exposure for a fee. Thirdly, please review my artist website as an example of a free artist's website (basic package) and note the website's (ARTSLANT) urge to the artist to upgrade for a fee. Yet, as stated above, this third website does not attract as many viewers as it may. This blog will evolve, as it's writer (artist) learns of ways in which she can become more accessible for exposure, and in turn hopes to teach the reader the process of evolving from a website to becoming part of the social network of the world wide web.

  1. Hi Jean
This is a great topic. Social media provides so many new tools and opportunities for artists to connect, access new networks, and share work. I look forward to reading about your exploration this semester.
